Should something be done about biodiversity in the capital?

Due to the increase of housing density in London, biodiversity is being lost in the capital as developers do not see it as an essential to consider when building. This is because they believe it will just lead to more hassle and higher costs.

To add fire to the flame, it has come to light that a lot of councils are now cutting experts on the subject due to a lack of funding. All of this adds up to a growing problem which could eventually see London becoming so built up that there simply isn’t room for biodiversity.

On behalf of the London Assembly Housing Committee, a report has been published which aims to encourage developers to keep biodiversity in mind when building new housing developments.

Leonie Cooper, AM at London Assembly said "During this investigation, I have had the pleasure of seeing first-hand some fantastic new housing developments across London that have truly incorporated nature. We’ve gathered the evidence, seen how it can be done and now we want to see change. The report makes recommendations to the Mayor to ensure that London maintains and improves on its current levels of biodiversity, even as the population continues to grow and the demand for new housing intensifies."

At the moment, around 47% of the city is made up of green space, and it’s important that we keep it this way.
