New research has found plumbers are the most in-demand tradespeople in the UK.

According to a study from a sample of over 161,320 requests by homeowners for recommended tradesmen on website Ratedpeople.com, 20,443 of these requests were for plumbers.

This figure represents almost 13 per cent of the total number of jobs requested and represents a 46.5 per cent year-on-year increase.

Gardeners and garden designers are second in Ratedpeople.com’s Top Ten list of in-demand trades, followed by builders, electricians and roofers.

Although builders came third in the chart, trade was down almost 20 per cent year on year.

Andrew Skipwith, chief executive, Ratedpeople.com, said: "These figures serve to highlight just how in demand traditional trades are. Whilst we are seeing an increasing number of requests for a growing range of niche trade skills - from security experts to loft conversion specialists - there remains an enormous demand for core trade skills, such as plumbers, electricians and carpenters."

"Given the current economic climate and the growing number of unemployed, these figures show the real value of having learned a trade, and that demand for services from home improvers remains very high."
